As the cost of prescription drugs skyrockets, it’s not too soon to ask for a price cut. According to a report from the New York Times, the price of generic fluconazole has jumped to over $2,000 for the first time in 15 years.
Fluconazole was the first of the new generic fluconazole brands, and is still the most popular brand name in the world. The price of generic fluconazole, for instance, jumped more than 8 percent over the same period of time.
The drugmaker recently told investors that it is working with drug manufacturers to provide more information about the pricing of its new generic drugs.
The company has not disclosed the full cost of the drug, which will be available through its subsidiary, Mylan Pharmaceuticals, and by mail order.
“Fluconazole is an extremely popular drug for the treatment of fungal infections, including athlete’s foot, jock itch, and ringworm,” the company said in a statement. “We are committed to providing our customers with effective and affordable treatment for fungal infections in this country.”
Fluconazole is a member of a class of drugs called azoles, which are classified as synthetic azoles and have an in the U. S. market of $3,000 to $5,000 per month. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved fluconazole as an oral or injectable treatment for the treatment of infections in adults.
“The FDA’s Office of Generic Drugs is working with our customers to make sure that they are getting the best generic drug for their health needs,” said Cindy Whitehead, chief executive officer of Mylan. “Fluconazole is a prescription drug, so the price of the drug will likely be determined by the manufacturer of the drug.”
As the generic fluconazole brand name has grown, it has become more widely available, and generic drugmakers have been able to charge more for their brand name drugs. However, as of early November, the average price of generic fluconazole for a month’s supply of brand name fluconazole was $1.04, according to a September 30, 2014, report by The Wall Street Journal.
The price of generic fluconazole is set to rise to a total of $2,908 per month over the next six months, according to the New York Times. This is up from the average price of $1.04 for a month’s supply of brand name fluconazole.

“The price of generic diflucan is set to increase as the cost of the brand name drug goes up,” said Mike Stipe, the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) director of research. “We’re seeing an increase in generic drug prices that will be a key driver for the cost of this drug.”
The price of generic fluconazole is set to increase in the first quarter of 2014, at a time when the drugmaker is offering additional discounts on its brand name drugs. The drugmaker, AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, said in a statement that it is working with drug manufacturers to provide more information about its pricing.
“This is the first time a drug company has announced a price increase to offset the cost of generic fluconazole and other brand name drugs. As the cost of generic fluconazole continues to increase, we are actively pursuing other drug makers to provide greater transparency in the pricing of their drug products,” AstraZeneca said.
